Tripoli’s self-proclaimed Natonal Salvation government quits-statement‏

(Maghreb news) – Libya’s self-appointed National Salvation government said on Tuesday on a statement posted by Tripoli-based justice ministry it is resigning, six days after the arrival in Tripoli of a U.N.-backed national unity government.

« We inform you that we are stopping our work as an executive power, as the presidency, members of parliament and ministers of the government, » the statement said, less than a week it warned the U.N-brokered government to leave or face arrest as « inflitrators ».

It said the decision to quit is aimed at sparing Libyan lives and preventing more divisions in the country.

However, the statement in Arabic does cary the stamp of the government but does not bear names or signatures of ministers. The announcement that the government is scuppering itself came after a number of ministers met to arrange for peaceful handover of power,  officials said.

The U.N.-brokered unity government has been operating from a naval base  on the edge of the Libyan capital as it seeks a broad endorsement by main political and military factions and avoid fanning further country’s strife.

Meanwhile, the Libyan Central Bank approved to speedy payments of imported basic foods and medicines in the coming days at the cost of 3.150 billion Libyan dinars following a meeting of the leaders of business associations and the bank’s top managers..
